Its predecessors and successors had more interesting dynamics in battle. Tl dr Electroball should had cared about speed more. This means that Thunderbolt and Electroweb do not overlap in their use at all.

This is likely due to the fact that Pikachu's Z-Move replaced the need for Pikachu's fourth move to be a powerful finisher. At the same time, it is not treated as more powerful than Volt Tackle and Thunder at times because it lacks any negative consequence that would dissuade Pikachu from spamming it.Įlectroweb replaced Electroball and lacked many of these issues because it never presented itself to be a strong move, just a utility move for trapping enemies and creating bouncy platforms. Whereas as I mentioned above, Pikachu has several ways to increase it's own speed or decrease the enemy speed that the viewer has seen so many times, that it would make perfect sense.Īnother issue is, how strong is Electroball supposed to be compared to Thunderbolt? The way that it is presented through the BW series, it appears to be more powerful than Thunderbolt and is often used as a finisher in many key battles.
ELECTROWEB VS ELECTROBALL FULL
The combination of Electroball + Iron Tail (Which one shotted Trip's Serperior at full health) for example made less natural sense compared to Volt Tackle + Iron Tail. That's not to say that Electroball doesn't have its moments of creativity that are really cool (Like against Clemont's Bunnelby) but sometimes it can fall flat. The fact that speed played no factor into Electroball's power stifled a lot of the potentially interesting interactions the move could have had. The problem however is that the writers decided to forego the ingame effect of Electroball and gave it a seemingly consistent power under normal circumstances. That would be the negative consequence that would be in line with Thunder and Volt Tackle, while offering similarly devastating power when potentially combined with the effects of static or with quick attack (A move that is often overshadowed in use compared to Iron Tail and Thunderbolt as is). Logically it would work brilliantly for Pikachu who has always been noted to be extremely fast, but it wouldn't be helpful in every situation because Pikachu might not be faster than every single opponent (Like Trip's Serperior who is significantly faster than Pikachu), or the difference in speed may not be so great that Electroball would be worth using over Thunderbolt. The move's power is dependent on the speed difference between the user and the target Pokemon.

The issue I have with Electroball is that it isn't supposed to be an inherently powerful move. However, Volt Tackle lacked the immense range that Thunder offered (Which completely flattened entire gyms like against Roxanne) and it was noticeably susceptible to powerful long range attacks like Hyper Beam and Rock Tomb.ĭuring BW, Electroball replaced Volt Tackle. It could also be combined with Iron Tail and potentially other moves that Thunder seemed the lack the flexibility for (The closest I think we get is using Quick Attack to fire point blank Thunders against Pokemon like against Roxanne). Thunder was a much more powerful and wider range version of Thunderbolt, but it came at the expense of draining Pikachu's stamina significantly afterwards.ĭuring AG, Volt Tackle replaced Thunder and thus replaced the stamina drain with recoil damage, which overall seemed to be a better tradeoff because we never really see Pikachu struggled with recoil the same way it did from exhaustion. However, everyone has differing opinions on which of Pikachu's ever-changing fourth move they have a preference for. I think replacing a move on Pikachu every so often allowed the writers to create interesting and fresh scenarios for battles involving Pikachu.
